Reflection

Experience

During these 14 weeks, I have learned a lot about typography. Before this class, I wondered what was the importance of typography and wasn't interested in it at all. However, the more I learned about the little intricate details about it as well as how to use it, the more interested in typography I got. It made me realize how words could be used to elevate a design more and I realized I could use this in the future as well. This module was extremely stressful because of the initial lack of an Adobe Prenium account. Despite all that, this module was really fun, I was happy to be able to do this module and learn from it.

Observations

I noticed I became more observant of type and the little nuances used in it. I find myself noticing typography everywhere I look now, and noticing how some parts do not fit and yet others do. I didn't really understand the significance of typography until now and how it plays in design and our everyday lives. Seeing everyone's works always filled me with the dread that mine is not as unique as everyone else's but I came to accept that simple designs are sometimes alright as well.

Findings

At first, I didn't understand the significance of this class besides the dread of this class being hard according to seniors, but I found that within these 14 weeks, I managed to learn about the nuances and technicalities involved in typography such as the x-height, ascenders, etc. I never really realised that a small tiny tweak within a letterform could drastically make it look better and how many of the tweaks are used in other types. I believe my greatest finding to be that I actually really enjoy typography and actually took the effort to learn more about it so I can get better at it. The classes were genuinely engaging and I know I'll be able to use what I learned in this module for my future works.
