Project 1: Mobile Application

In this project, we were required to to create a proposal documentation for a future project. We were required to redesign an existing app that is lacking in user experience or interface design with the preliminary approval by the module coordinator.

For the requirements:

  1. Create a power point proposal about the application
  2. Make a survey, get interviews, and do research on the market of the selected topic
  3. Include key features and provide clear flowchart of the app
  4. Determine whether the mobile application idea is good to continue to the next development phrase.
    Draft Proposal

For this first week's task, we were to research various applications and choose three company apps that we believe could benefit from enhancements in their design. Our objective is to identify all existing drawbacks and propose potential solutions for the design.

We were to make a concise report outlining your discoveries, which will be showcased via slides and presented for feedback during Week 2. For the introduction, we had to put the company's information, capture screenshots of all pages on each company application design and compile them onto individual slides. For subsequent slides, we focus on specific areas within the screenshots that we believed could be improved on the user interface design and user experience. That will then accompany each analysis with the rationale behind the identified issues and propose suitable solutions.

Unfortunately, I didn't make much progress initially when it came to the draft proposal and ended up not being able to present it immediately. I was not able to completely elaborate on the issues and the reasonings why I chose the applications and was given a few extra days to justify my reasons.

      Figure 1.1 | Failed Draft Presentation (30.04.24 - Week 2)

I tried to make sure that I wasn't completely trapped in just one category of apps and explored any app I could find or had some familiarity with that could be redesigned and approved by the module lecturer.

In the end, I ended up choosing three applications that I would want to try redesigning.

      1. HoYoLAB
      2. myllaollaoclub
      3. mmCineplexes

HoYoLab is a community forum owned COGNOSPHERE PTE. LTD., with miHoYo as its parent organization. It features official information on the company’s games and offers users with rewards. While the application has a 4.1 (on Google Play) and a 4.2 (on IOS Apple Store), many people has complained the interface and the errors it has.

For myllaollaoclub and mmCineplexes, both apps have a rating of below 2.0 with many of their issues being that it is buggy and cannot achieve its original use while not having a good user interface.

In the end, I chose mmCineplexes to be the subject of my the final proposal draft after Mr. Zeon took a quick look at my draft proposal.

      Finalised Proposal

For the final proposal, there are 5 category we need to include in our proposal:

      1. Introduction:
        • Outline the proposal's main purpose.
        • Explain the importance of mobile application design and how it impacts user experience.
      2. Background & Context:
        • Describe the mobile application and its current design.
        • Analyze the strengths and weaknesses.
        • Explain the user demographics and user needs of the application.
      3. Goals and Objectives:
        • Define the objectives of the redesign.
        • Identify the primary and secondary goals for the new design.
        • Explain how the new design will address user needs and improve user experience
      4. User Research:
        • Describe the user research methods you will use.
        • Explain how you will gather user feedback and insights.
        • Provide a plan for user testing and validation.

      Finalised Proposal Idea

      Application name: mmCineplexes
      Category: Entertainment
      Target audience: Moviegoers
Largest Age Group: 25-34 years old

mmCineplexes is Malaysia's third-largest cinema circuit, known for its focus on value and comfort. It is operated by MM2 Screen Management Sdn Bhd, and its headquarters is located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The app offers facilitating bookings of seats in their movie theaters and feature offers that the users can get (Cinema Snacks, Discounts, etc.) and offering premium experiences for their users.

The cinema chain focuses on providing value and comfort which makes it an appealing choice for families, casual movie fans, and those looking for an affordable yet enjoyable cinematic experience.

      Figure 1.5 | mmCineplexes App (Google Play) (06.05.25 - Week 3)

The reviews in the application mostly mention something wrong with the optimization of the payment section of the app and it being horribly bugged while also complaining about the fact that the newest branches of mmCineplexes has not been added to the application for years now.

      Figure 1.6 | Competitors (06.05.25 - Week 3)

To create a good interface and experience on this application, we need to saw other competitive companies to see what we could take from their user interface. There were 3 chosen apps I choose which are GSC, TGV and LFS Cinemas. All of the applications has issues but there are parts of its interface that could be taken and made to be part of a good interface.

      Figure 1.7 | Comparisons (06.05.25 - Week 3)

During the next week, I did get feedback that the comparisons that I did were more general than specific so I made sure to make my comparisons more specific through more observations of all the applications.

      General Feedback:

      • Not much to be able to give Feedback on.
      General Feedback:
      • Cannot do Waze due to it not having enough pages.

        Week 3
        General Feedback:

        • Put a description of the page underneath the displayed page.

          Week 4
          General Feedback:

          • Need to elaborate more and be more specific on the competitors and current application.

          Reflection

          Experience:

It was really hard to gather data and analyze the needed data for the slides but with long enough comparisons to other more used apps and lessons on YouTube and the lectures provided, it got easier.

          Observation:

I found that analyzing design more critically and finding flaws in design more than a usual person is quite difficult for me as I usually generally shrug off the problems in a design and learn to navigate over it. However through observing other applications similar to the one I have chosen, I was able to see what are some of the more minial flaws in the bigger flaws. I believe I was able to identify most of what I could with my limited knowledge.

          Findings:

This project allowed me to realise the potential flaws in applications and ways that could possibly fix them while also allowing me to understand the littler parts of the user's experience that make people think apps are easier to use. Applications that are poorly built often miss the little parts and it gave me a lot of information on what one should do in future design in apps.
