Deciding the Topic & Research

During the first week, our team gathered in a group chat and started discussing what topics we could do. We gathered the topics in a google document and held an online meeting on which we should pick. We voted on what topic we wanted to research and do some animation. We ended up voting for the topic, "About Matcha."

We chose the following parts to talk about when it came to matcha. Which is written below:

  • The Origin of Matcha
  • Cultivation and Processing of Matcha
  • How is Matcha prepared
  • Usages of Matcha
  • Qualitative Data Analysis of Matcha
  • Health Benefits of Matcha
  • My group mates and I did some more in depth research on the topics we were responsible for and worked together on the Flip Presentation Slides as we were supposed to present during Week 3.

We then showed out lecturer the work we had done so far during Week 2's tutorial class. He suggested that we narrowed down our topic to one direction, as we had too many things to talk about for the infographic video itself. After some discussion on what we should do, we decided that we will be focusing on showcasing the usages of matcha by providing quick, simple, and easy Matcha Recipes.

Below is the artstyle, color palette, and font style that we have selected for the short animation.

With all the information we needed to present, we were finally able to finish our presentation and show our work in these slides.

    3. Animation Process

The animation first started with the storyboard of how we were going to animate this. One of our teammates, Thahira, was responsible for this and did a good job on it despite the limited time we had. Our leader then separated the storyboard into parts we would do as digital posters.

Figure 1.4 | Storyboard by Thahira

Originally, we were set to do digital posters first before we animate the infographic but we realised that our style of drawing the materials in it are somewhat inconsistent with some lineart being shaky and some being really clean. We were then set to do separate parts of the animation process and frames instead. We separated ourselves into three groups: Sketches, Lineart, Coloring

I was originally part of the Coloring Team before switching over to the Sketching Team. I was tasked with sketching an animation for the keyframes 10-18 and 22.

    Figure 1.5 | Animation Process #1

Animating frame by frame was much harder than I thought since I never did 24fps animations before this assignment. However, I did what I could and discussed what could be done to some parts that would be intensely hard to animate at my current level and cost a lot of time with my leader. I started with placing the storyboard into the Animate program and matched the keyframes with the audio.

I then proceeded to draw the sketch first before animating the movement of the frames. The onion tool helped greatly with pinpointing the previous frame or the next frame of the animation.

With the basic understanding of some animation I learned online and in classes beforehand, I did what I could to animate what I can. There were times where I misheard the audio and drew the wrong sketch, but I quickly fixed it when I realised I did. I also didn't follow some of the storyboard art as it could have been a little confusing to the people watching the scene.

After I was done animating the keyframes, I sent it to the lineart team to continue on the work.

I was then tasked to adjust some of the subtitles by our team leader in order to fit the video more and make it more coherent.

After this, I exported the video and sent it to our leader for checking. And now, we were done!

    5. Reflection

    Experience:

It was a fun experience to study about matcha and getting to know each other through meetings and discussions. Everyone did a lot and contributed a lot to the process of making the Flip Presentation and the animation! We all had good communication towards each other and managed to complete in the end! We had to learn different ways to animate like through Adobe Animate but it was genuinely fun seeing everything come together and move! Even more so seeing it get polished!

    Observation:

Throughout the project, I found it quite easy to message everyone for help and ask if what I was doing was correct. I also observed that pressure to make sure that I don't let everyone down causes me to work harder so we can have quality work delivered! I also observed that I managed to apply my previous lessons on animation before I went into university and saw online in a good way with the sketches.

    Findings:

This project made me realize how important it is to communicate with others to ensure good work progress and relationships. The overall finding of this entire project was of course on how to present information in a visually appealing way. And with this project, I believe we managed to achieve that.
