Task 1 | Vormator Challenge

What is the Vormator Challenge?

Vormator is the ultimate challenge of your creativity: the aim of project is to give each artist the chance to show his abilities to create a stunning piece with limited means. Each person will get the exact same set of 8 shapes, the Elements.

With these shapes you are challenged to create your own unique design, within the limitations provided in the Rulebook. Designers are thus challenged to create a unique piece within a strict set of rules. It all comes down to pure skills and creativity in this project.

The Rulebook

  1. You ARE allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Elements
  2. You DON'T have to use all the Elements Scaling is allowed, but ONLY proportionally, so NO skewing or free transform
  3. You CAN add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fit The use of color is unrestricted; you can create your own color schemes (e.g. use Kuler)
  4. You ARE allowed to use gradients The Elements may ONLY be filled, the use of strokes is NOT allowed
  5. You are NOT allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows)

Vormator Character

When I first saw this challenge, I wanted to make a fox spirit out of it. However, it was hard for me to completely accomplish what I wanted since I wasn't familiar with Illustrator as a program yet when I was making this. I couldn't get the result I really wanted at first so I tried to compromise by making the fox seem like a statue with its tail and color scheme being of a lotus.

Task 2 | Pokemon Card

For this task, the objective is to place the character made into a Pokemon card composition, incorporating foreground, mid-ground, and background elements. I was also allowed to create a new shape not bound by the Vormator rules or shapes.

I decided to add a butt to the fox in order to make it more like fox than before as a suggestion from a friend and added shadows and more details onto the fox in order to make it more eye catching such as adding more layers in order to create a sense of depth.

I then added a lily pad underneath the character as well as made several other lotuses in order to fit the environment. I added some rocks behind the fox as well as a waterfall from some references.

Reflection

Experience

Making the Vormator character was extremely hard and stressful not because of the work itself but because of my unfamiliarity of the Illustrator program. In the end, I managed to learn more about Illustrator and how to compose and artwork using rules.

Observations

I noticed that I often found myself leaning towards things I have seen before rather than making something completely new as compared to the others. I found myself constantly choosing the safer option too. After that, I decided to push my boundaries a little in order to make an appealing artwork to submit.

Findings

I managed to learn how to make vector images and how to use swatches to recolor the artwork in Illustrator.
